Char's Zaku II by LucasDurham Char's Zaku II by LucasDurham
An anniversary present for my girlfriend. She's REALLY into the Universal Century Gundam franchise. Char is her favorite character, so I thought I'd paint her a picture of his trademark mobile suit.

Done mostly in watercolor. I also added a few highlights with a few touches of watercolor pencils and I painted the stars with a splatter technique using white acrylic paint.

Damn awesome job! I'm not to used to seeing the Red Comet so... red. But it's not unbecoming, either, and it still brings Char Aznable fresh to mind.
The detailing and shading on the Zaku are terrific, and I can tell you used some penciling on the damaged and weathered parts, which stands out really well, but not overpowering, either.
The background really sells the piece, though! The colors all gradient very well and, with the exception of a few texture discrepancies, gives an over-all natural cosmic feel.

Actually, after seeing your WIP's, the background texture was intentional, which is even more astounding.
I'd never seen a technique like that! O___O

Awesome painting -the bullet holes in the shoulder armor were done really well! :D All the details and shading look wonderful! Love how you did the background too.

Thanks!
If you're interested, I posted progression pictures for how I painted the background on my Facebook FanPage:

Very cool! I haven't painted traditionally in over 4 or 5 years, so it's really interesting to see your process and what you can do to get those effects. Also 'liked' your page. :dummy:
